A garden design process tailored to suit
I provide a full and bespoke garden design service from consultation to concept and through to completion, just as an Architect provides a design for a house or extension. The design process is broken down into a series of distinct stages, which align with my scope of services summarised below.
-
Initial Consultation
Every project starts with a relaxed chat, hopefully accompanied by a cup of tea! The initial consultation provides a chance to meet and discuss your current patch as well as your aspirations for your new garden
-
Survey
The spring board for each design is to survey and analyse the extents of the existing garden. Good design depends on solid base information so getting this part right helps the latter stages of the process
-
Sketch Design
The creative “drawing board” stage where your brief starts to become a reality. Design ideas are explored and shared with the aid of concept sketches, hand drawn plans/sections, 3D models and mood boards
-
Masterplan
The Masterplan locks in and formalises the sketch design, ready for the detail stage. At this point, some clients choose to take the project forward themselves, whilst others stick with their designer for the long haul
-
Construction Detailing
“The devil is in the detail” as they say, and gardens are no different. Carefully considered setting out and detail drawings are produced to assist in translating paper concepts into site realities
-
Material Specification
Selecting a cohesive palette of appropriate hardscape materials, which fit your brief whilst working well with each other and the planting, elevates the design both functionally and aesthetically
-
Planting Design
Creating schemes which combines colour, texture and form with a knowledge of growing conditions produces rich, beneficial garden spaces with year round interest, which are tailored to your maintenance needs
-
Project Monitoring
Overseeing the works on site and maintaining a close relationship between designer, client and contractor ensures the build unfolds smoothly, with the finished garden more likely to resemble the design
-
Planting
Simultaneously, the final piece of the jigsaw and the start of your new garden’s life. As Margaret Atwood wisely observed, “In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt”
